Morzine in Summer

By April 7, 2014Local Information

If it’s a summer holiday you are after then you’ve come to the right place.  Morzine is fast becoming one of Europe’s top destinations for downhill mountain biking. There are  24 lifts open to enable access to hundreds of kilometers of purpose built tracks. Many professionals come here to train during the summer months.  The Pleney main line is world famous and some people spend a whole week just lapping it.  There is so much to choose from here though with Les Gets bike park and the rest of the Portes du Soleil area all connected via lifts to Morzine.

Morzine in summer is all action. It all kicks off on the last weekend of June with the Passportes du Soleil, an 80km bike ride covering the whole Portes du Soleil ski area.  Anyone can take part, you just need to get in quick when they release the tickets in February!  In 2012 over 6000 competitors took part in the 3 day event which sold out almost straight away.

There is also plentiful cross country and road biking with some of the greatest alpine passes within a short distance of Morzine.  Every four years the Tour de France passes through here.

If hiking is more your thing then you’re in luck!  The GR5 passes straight through Morzine on the Chamonix- Lake Geneva stretch.  The ski lifts are also available to walkers in the summer if you fancy something a little gentler.

There are other activities you can try out here such as white water rafting with Frogs Rafting on the Dranse river.  Or paragliding with one of the many qualified tandem pilots in the area.

Don’t be fooled though into thinking Morzine is all about action sports.  There are plenty more relaxing pursuits including the Olympic size outdoor pool  and brand new indoor swimming pool complex complete with sauna and steam rooms.  There are also many other family activities to keep you entertained such as pony rides and visits to the local cheese factory.  Take a look at the Morzine-Avoriaz tourist office website for more details.
